Internship for pre-students

Pre-Midwifery

Are you considering a career as a midwife?

Participate in a 4-12 week medical internship and boost your career by shadowing midwives at a hospital abroad. Gain certainty of your choice of study, unique medical insight and an opportunity to combine career development with good experiences and new friends for life.

How does the pre-midwifery program work?

On the program, you shadow a trusted midwife from one of our partner hospitals that will serve as your mentor in the daily work at the department. Together with your mentor you will go on ward rounds, observe births, caesarean sections and experience the daily life in the hospital. At the different patients, your mentor will be sharing her experience, explain in detail the patient’s condition and answer questions about procedures and treatment of the patient. Your mentor will give you a clear insight into the daily work and help you break down any barriers you may have. Your mentor is well aware that this is your first time in a hospital setting so there are no wrong questions.

Furthermore, you and your fellow Try Medics students will participate in lessons, held by the hospital staff to improve your knowledge of relevant diseases in the various departments. In this way you will get a good theoretical basis for what you experience on the wards.

What can you expect to experience in the hospital?

You will work closely with your mentor and go through the steps of pregnancy from antenatal to postnatal. The internship will give you an invaluable insight into what is required in a midwifery career and help you develop a better understanding of global health care. During your internship you will at least be with one fellow student so you can share the experience together. We see a strong bond and new friendships for life among students as you all go on the program with a common interest in the medical field.

How much can you expect to be at the hospital?

A typical internship day runs from about 7:30 to 12:00 and continues once weekly into the afternoon with theoretical lessons. You may find that internship days vary slightly Eg. there may be a birth or a planned caesarean section in the afternoon, which you must observe.

With the schedule, it is possible to explore the destination in your spare time. The internship runs from Monday to Friday. In the free time there will be ample opportunity to take advantage of the destination’s many possibilities. Many activities are included in your stay as swimming with wild dolphins on Zanzibar or experiencing the savannah in Uganda.

Personal and career benefits

If you are interested in studying midwifery, this program is a great starting point and a boost to your career. You will gain unique medical insight, career benefits on your CV and an unforgettable experience in a busy hospital.

Maybe your grade point average does not allow you the direct route to midwifery school admission. The internship improves your options by giving you the unique experience that strengthens your personal statement as well as give you supporting statements from the participating hospital mentors, which can be included in an application.

Who will take care of you?

We have established a safe and relaxed family environment on each destination to enhance your exploration and learning experience. Our dedicated program manager will be on top of your placement ensuring you get properly introduced to the hospital and the mentors involved. The program manager will constantly follow up on your progress and be there during the whole of your stay. The manager is also helpful with good advices on fun local activities you and your fellow students can go on. You will be staying in the Try Medics house with the rest of your Try Medics group. In addition to the program manager there will be chefs, housekeepers, drivers and security guards at the house to ensure that your focus only needs to be on your midwifery internship.
