Internship for students

Learn more about our internships for students

Are you studying medicine and want a clinical experience abroad?

Gain 4-12 week unforgettable experience of clinical work in a developing country by shadowing doctors at a busy hospital. You will get a unique insight into tropical diseases you otherwise rarely experience at home, career benefits on your CV and insight into different  hospital departments of your choice. It is a perfect opportunity to combine career development with good experiences and new friends for life. As a medical student you will in many cases have  an opportunity to get academic credit for the stay.

How does the medical program work?

On the program, you follow a trusted doctor from one of our partner hospitals that will serve as your mentor in the daily work at the department. Together with your mentor you will go on ward rounds, observe procedures and experience the daily life in the hospital.

At the different patients, your mentor will be sharing his experience, explain in detail the patient’s condition and answer any question you might have. If your mentor feels that you are fit, there will also be an opportunity to help (hands-on experience) under supervision according to your current educational level.

Furthermore, you and your fellow Try Medics students will receive lectures, held by the hospital staff to improve your knowledge on diseases relevant to the area and the hospital where the internship takes place.

Which departments?

In order to provide a broader knowledge of a physician’s work, we give you the option to select a new department every week in the hospital. You choose your department preferences, and we will try to meet your wishes as best we can. We tailor a minimum stay of 4 weeks with regard to your preferences and the distribution of the Try Medics students. If in doubt about the choice of specialization, the internship may help you on your way, since you will get an insight into the work of various departments.

How much can you expect to be in the hospital?

A typical internship day runs from about 7:30 to 12:00 and continues once weekly into the afternoon with theoretical lessons. You may find that internship days vary slightly depending on which department you are placed. Eg. if you are on the surgical ward, there may be planned surgery in the afternoon, which you must observe.

On request it is possible to extend your time at the hospital, so your internship runs from about 7:30 to 15:00.

With the schedule, it is possible to explore the destination in your spare time. The internship runs from Monday to Friday. In the free time there will be ample opportunity to take advantage of the destination’s many possibilities. Many activities are included in your stay as swimming with wild dolphins on Zanzibar or experiencing the savannah in Uganda.

Can you combine your stay with a course of study?

The options vary depending on where you study and how much of your study you have completed. We therefore recommend you contact your counselor and investigate whether you can combine our stay with a course of study. We will be happy to assist you with any documentation required.

Who will take care of you?

We have established a safe and relaxed family environment on each destination to enhance your exploration and learning experience. Our dedicated program manager will be on top of your placement ensuring you get properly introduced to the hospital and the mentors involved. The program manager will constantly follow up on your progress and be there during the whole of your stay. The manager is also helpful with good advices on fun local activities you and your fellow students can go on. You will be staying in the Try Medics house with the rest of your Try Medics group. In addition to the program manager there will be chefs, housekeepers, drivers and security guards at the house to ensure that your focus only needs to be on your medical internship.
