Join an internship in the cheerful and laid-back town of Entebbe, Uganda. The primary focus of your placement is your medical experiences. However, you will also have the opportunity to explore the country's exciting culture and beautiful nature with your fellow participants during your free time around your hospital placement. We hope you make the most of your stay in Uganda, and we have tailored a program of unique spare time activities.

Some activities are included as standard when joining the placement, such as a weekend safari where you will experience the animals you saw in The Lion King as a child in their natural habitat!

Other activities are offered as optional additions, such as an extended weekend trip to the White Nile River. Here, you will have the opportunity to go river rafting, horseback riding, ATV riding, and more.

Safari

A 'must' when staying in East Africa is to embark on a safari adventure. During this trip, you will have the extraordinary opportunity to witness the diverse wildlife of the savannah in their natural habitats. This includes giraffes, lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, antelopes, crocodiles, and more.

The safari takes places in Uganda's Murchison Falls National Park, renowned for its distinctive wildlife and a spectacular 43-meter waterfall that you will have the chance to observe up close. The excursion spans from Friday morning to Sunday evening.

The safari is all-inclusive, covering transportation, meals, accommodation, guides, and entrance to the national park

Weekend of resort visit and guided bike tour

Saturday:

After a week filled with new impressions, the first Saturday of every placement is dedicated to relaxation. You and the other participants will have the opportunity to unwind at a large resort overlooking Lake Victoria (Serena Resort & Spa). At the resort, you can enjoy their outdoor pool area and spa center. There is also a fitness center on-site for those who want to stay active.

After breakfast on Saturday, you will be transported to the resort, and later in the afternoon, there will be transportation back to the Try Medics house.

You will be responsible for covering the cost of lunch during the day, where you have the option to use the hotel's restaurant. It should also be noted that activities in the spa center, such as massages, are also at your own expense. You'll likely discover that the prices are often more affordable than what you're accustomed to in your home country.

Sunday:

On Sunday, you will partake in a guided cycling tour in Entebbe. The bike tour is a enjoyable way to gain a deeper understanding of the local area surrounding your hospital placement.

The tour concludes with lunch before returning to the Try Medics house.

Sunday Church

Attending church on a Sunday in Uganda is a truly unique experience. The Try Medics staff invites you and your fellow participants to join a morning church service if you're up for it.

Teambuilding

Throughout your stay, you'll be in the company of other young individuals who share your passion for the medical field. We've observed that a strong bond quickly develops among participants, fostering joy in sharing experiences both within and outside the hospital internship.

To swiftly cultivate camaraderie, we arrange games at the Try Medics house during one of your initial afternoons on the program. The Try Medics team at the destination, whom you'll interact with daily and who will ensure the seamless progress of your stay, will also join in these activities. This creates a warm and supportive atmosphere on the placement.

Afro Fit

One afternoon during your stay, a local dance instructor will visit the Try Medics house and provide an hour-long Afro Fit lesson.

Local Market

Our activity coordinator in Uganda will invite you and your fellow travelers on a walking tour to the local market near Try Medics' house in Entebbe. The visit to the local market will be organized one afternoon after the conclusion of an internship day.

Farewell Party

On the last Friday of your stay, Try Medics will host a farewell party to celebrate the time spent in Uganda and completion of your internship. During the event, you will be presented with a certificate, and there will be a BBQ, accompanied by a performance from a local cultural dance group.

Mall Visit

A short drive from the Try Medics house where you will be staying, you'll discover the Victoria Mall Entebbe. We organize weekly transportation to and from the center, offering you and your fellow travelers an optional opportunity to make use of the facilities in your spare time. The center features a pleasant café, fitness center, flea market, and a cinema.

Weekendtrip to the Nile River

The Nile River flows through Uganda, and its idyllic surroundings offer a unique natural experience. This trip combines a close encounter with the river with fun action packed activities from a Friday to Sunday during the placement. The itinerary is as follows:

Friday

A Friday morning during your stay, you and your fellow travelers will be driven to Jinja and accommodated at The Haven Uganda Hotel. After lunch at the hotel, you'll get your adrenaline pumping with a one-hour guided ATV tour along the banks of the Nile.

Saturday

Saturday is dedicated to river rafting. The trip is considered one of the most enjoyable and wildest one-day rafting adventures globally. It's suitable for adventurous individuals and requires no previous experience. Together with a guide and your fellow travelers, you'll go through exercises before embarking on the river.

Sunday

On Sunday, you'll go horseback riding in areas along the banks of the Nile. Prior riding skills are not necessary, as all horses are well-trained and suitable for all levels. Before your ride, you'll receive training on how to control your horse, and the trip will be guided at a pace you feel comfortable with. The riding club has a rule that riders must not weigh more than 85kg for the safety of the horses. If you exceed the limit, we will offer an alternative activity such as a massage at the hotel or a boat cruise on the Nile.

After riding, there will be lunch at the hotel, followed by a drive back to the Try Medics house in Entebbe, allowing you to rest for a new week of internship the following day. The drive back to the house takes about 3 hours.

This extended optional weekend trip costs 600 USD and includes all transportation, 2 nights' accommodation, 1 hour of horseback riding, 1 hour of ATV safari, a full-day river rafting trip, and all meals. Most travelers usually participate in the trip.

Botanical Garden Visit

In the city of Entebbe, where you will be staying during your program, lies the Botanical Garden overlooking Lake Victoria. You and your group will have the opportunity to visit the park one afternoon after the end of an internship day. In the park, you might be lucky enough to spot Colobus monkeys, and you'll have the chance to feed the vervet monkeys alongside the park's animal caretaker.

Cinema Trip

A short drive from Try Medics' house is the Numax Cinema at the Victoria Mall shopping center in Entebbe. Some evenings during your stay, we arrange a cinema trip for you, your fellow travelers, and the Try Medics staff.

The cost of going to the cinema is 20,000 Ugandan shillings (approximately 6 USD).

Zipline and Treetop Obstacle Course

This excursion takes you to a small island on Lake Victoria, where a guided tour of the island awaits.

During the tour, you'll have the chance to witness the varied wildlife inhabiting the island and admire the stunning natural scenery.

After the tour, you'll reach the treetop obstacle course. Here, you can navigate around the tree canopy, putting your climbing skills to the test. The climbing course concludes with an exhilarating zipline experience.

With three distinct difficulty levels, the climbing course ensures accessibility for all participants.

On the island, a lunch featuring primarily local cuisine will be served.

Zipline og Trætops forhindringsbane

Floden Nilen løber igennem Uganda og dens idylliske omgivelser, er en unik naturoplevelse. På denne tur kommer du helt tæt på i kombination med sjove aktiviteter.

Turen foregår fra en fredag morgen til søndag aften og står på riverrafting, ridning på hest, ATV kørsel og overnatninger med udsigt over Nilen.

Turens forløb er at du og dine medrejsende en fredag morgen under opholdet, vil blive kørt til Jinja og indlogeret på hotellet The Haven Uganda. Efter frokost på hotellet, vil i få adrenalinen op med en times guidet ATV tur langs Nilens bredder.

Lørdagen står på riverrafting. Turen betragtes som en af de sjoveste og vildeste endags rafting ture i verden. Turen er for dig der er eventyrlysten og kræver ingen præ-erfaring. Du vil sammen med en guide og dine medrejsende, gennemgå øvelser før i begiver jer ud på floden.

Om søndagen skal i ride på hest i områder langs Nilens bredder. Du behøves ikke at kunne ride for at tage på turen, da alle hestene er veltrænet og egner sig til alle niveauer. Før din ridetur, vil du blive trænet i hvordan du styrer din hest og turen vil foregå med en guide i det tempo du føler dig tryg i. Rideklubben har en regel om at ryttere maximalt må veje 85kg, for hestenes sikkerhed. Overstiger du grænsen, vil vi tilbyde en alternativ aktivitet du kan lave, som f.eks. massage ved hotellet eller en båd cruise på Nilen.

Efter ridning vil der være frokost ved hotellet og derefter kørsel tilbage til Try Medics huset i Entebbe, så du kan nå at blive veludhvilet til en ny praktikuge den efterfølgende dag. Køreturen tilbage til huset tager ca. 3 timer.

Denne forlænget weekendtur koster 3599 DKK og inkluderer, alt transport, 2 overnatninger, 1 times ridning, 1 times ATV safari, endags riverrafting tur samt alle måltider. Oftest tager alle rejsende på turen.

Try Medics House in Uganda

You and your fellow participants will reside in our Try Medics house in Entebbe. The house is exclusively for participants on the program and is located a 5-minute drive from the hospital.

The house features a large garden, great relaxation areas, a volleyball court, TV, a view of Lake Victoria, and plenty of space to socialize with your fellow participants after completing your internship day.

Additionally, there is Wifi in the house, allowing you to stay in touch with those back home.

We find that a strong bond is formed among participants, as everyone shares a common interest in the healthcare field. Therefore, it is safe to embark on the journey alone! Typically, there are 14-22 participants on the program simultaneously.

Daily transportation to and from the hospital will be provided for you and your fellow participants.

Uganda, widely recognized as the Pearl of Africa, stands out for its fortile soil and vast vegetation. The nation showcases remarkable natural endowments and a population characterized by warmth and hospitality.

Uganda encompasses Lake Victoria, the fount of the Nile, providing an opportunity for an exhilarating weekend along the banks of this renowned river. The country is also home to numerous national parks where one can encounter a diverse array of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, and giraffes.

Having transitioned from a former British colony to a sovereign state in 1962, Uganda has triumphed over periods of civil unrest and the oppressive regime of Idi Amin. It has since evolved into a stable nation experiencing economic advancement, a reality evident in the dynamic streets of contemporary Kampala.

Delving beyond the urban landscape into smaller villages unveils a more uncomplicated way of life, predominantly centered around agricultural pursuits.
