Are you a healthcare student considering an internship abroad?
At Try Medics, as a healthcare student, you have a unique opportunity to take part in a structured internship abroad as part of a semester or as a self-arranged clinical placement during holiday periods. The programs are offered in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The internship will expand your understanding of global healthcare and the treatment options of skilled professionals in a relatively resource-poor and culturally different environment compared to the usual Danish setting. This environment is characterized by being located in the warm climate belt around the equator.
Programs are offered to students in nursing, medicine, physiotherapy, radiography, occupational therapy, dentistry, and biomedical laboratory science.
In consultation with our partner hospital, we will arrange your internship before the program starts, taking into account your field of study and preferences such as desired departments for the clinic.
For each department you are assigned to during the internship, you will be paired with hospital staff who will act as your mentor and involve you in the daily work.
Together with your mentor, you will accompany them to treat patients, observe procedures, and experience the daily routine of the department.
Your mentor aims to provide you with a valuable learning experience and will seek to give you hands-on tasks that match your educational level. The tasks vary depending on the department you are assigned to but may include assisting with wound care, clinical observations, and measuring vital signs under the mentor's supervision.
To ensure the best possible outcome from the internship, it is important to take shared responsibility for regularly aligning expectations with your mentor regarding hands-on tasks. This way, the difficulty of the tasks will neither be too simple nor too overwhelming in relation to your current skills.
Additionally, for each department you are assigned to, you will typically be paired with a mentor and at least one fellow student. We find this beneficial, as it gives you someone to share and reflect with.
We tailor your internship according to your field of study, whether it's nursing, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, radiography, occupational therapy, midwifery, or biomedical science.
Nursing and medical students have the option to specify up to five department preferences when registering.
During the internship, department changes can occur weekly, but to ensure optimal conditions for hands-on experience and a deeper insight into the department's work and routines, we recommend spending at least two weeks in each department.
The program covers various specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, orthopedics, obstetrics (birth), gynecology, pediatrics, emergency medicine, gastroenterology, physiotherapy, and dental clinics.
Try Medics offers unique opportunities for nursing students who wish to complete their clinical internship abroad. The program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in an international healthcare context, broadening their professional and cultural horizons.
Through Try Medics, nursing students have the chance to work at hospitals and health clinics in various countries, where they will be mentored by experienced healthcare professionals. This experience not only provides insight into different medical systems and practices but also strengthens the student's ability to adapt and work in multicultural teams.
The internship program is carefully structured to ensure that participants gain maximum learning and development. Students will engage in daily clinical activities, observe various treatment methods, and have the opportunity to participate in healthcare projects that have a direct impact on local communities.
The internship runs from Monday to Friday, with times varying depending on the department and your mentor's schedule. Typically, a practice day will be from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Once a week, the internship extends into the afternoon with a one-hour theoretical lesson held by hospital staff. These lessons are designed to shed light on topics such as the structure of the healthcare system and the primary challenges in your chosen destination.
Can you combine the internship with a study program?
There are generally good opportunities to combine the internship with a semester program across health-related educational institutions. We have had many students participate, especially in their 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th semesters.
For certain educational institutions, Try Medics has a formal collaboration agreement offering internships for specific semesters. These offers can be found on this page.
If you wish to combine the internship with your studies, it's important to ensure your institution allows it. We recommend contacting your academic advisor for pre-approval of the internship.
We can assist in providing documentation about the internship and communicate with your academic advisor before you leave. Additionally, we will do our best to meet your learning objectives for the study program.
If our fixed internship start dates do not align with the period your school allows, just let us know. We can arrange alternative start dates to match the period your school permits.
Cultural experiences around your internship
Our internships are offered in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Uganda.
There will be plenty of time to explore your chosen destination outside of the internship, both in the afternoons and during free weekends.
The program includes a variety of leisure activities, which we will organize for you and the rest of your group. Activities include weekend safaris in Uganda or a boat safari in Zanzibar.
Typically, there are 12-16 students participating at the same time. We find that a strong sense of community forms quickly among participants, and it’s rewarding to share the experiences both inside and outside of the internship.
Specific leisure activities included for each destination can be found in the individual destination descriptions, which can be accessed here.
On each destination, there is a dedicated team that ensures your stay runs smoothly and is well-structured.
The team includes a program manager who will ensure you are properly introduced to the hospital and its staff. The manager will follow up on your well-being and progress throughout your internship.
In addition to the program manager, the team consists of cooks, cleaning staff, drivers, and others, all of whom contribute to ensuring that you can fully focus on your learning and experience.
Where will I stay?
You will stay in the Try Medics house at your chosen destination with the rest of your group.
Our accommodations have good facilities with large common areas and outdoor spaces, Wi-Fi, etc. A video of the house for each destination can be found at the bottom of the individual destination descriptions.
Is it necessary to participate with a study partner?
Many choose to go on the internship without knowing anyone beforehand, and we believe this is well-supported. We often find that a strong sense of community forms quickly, and participants create positive new relationships as they share many experiences together.
Getting to know fellow participants usually happens faster than expected.
Before the start of the program, we create a Facebook group for all participants who are leaving at the same time. Here, we will also provide flight route suggestions, which we recommend everyone book so you can safely travel together to and from the destination.
The program is a unique opportunity to combine professional development with cultural experiences, new acquaintances, and social interaction. It’s an excellent opportunity for international internships during your studies.
If you can relate to the following, the program may be for you:
✔️ You want to expand your understanding of global healthcare.
