During your stay in Zanzibar with Try Medics, you’ll be alongside other young individuals who share your interest in the healthcare field. You’ll have practical training every weekday, from Monday to Friday, in the morning hours. Around the internship, various activities will be arranged for you to participate in.
Zanzibar is often referred to as a holiday destination. However, upon visiting, one quickly realizes that the island offers much more than fine hotels and beach areas. With a population of 1.4 million, you encounter a friendly population and rich cultural history.
Zanzibar has functioned as an international trade center due to its coveted location in the Indian Ocean. Over time, the island has been influenced by various countries, resulting in an incredibly colorful culture with a diverse history.
The programs we offer for young adults in their gap year and students in higher education in healthcare fields are designed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar. The stay provides travelers with a unique opportunity to gain relevant knowledge in the healthcare field while, in their free time, immersing themselves in the island’s culture and experiencing its many attractions.
The size of Zanzibar makes everything reasonably accessible. The longest stretch on the island takes a two-hour drive from the southern to the northern point. As part of the Try Medics program, two full-time drivers ensure transportation to and from the internship site and organize leisure activities on some late afternoons and weekends during the journey.
Try Medics has been in Zanzibar for many years and has extensive knowledge of the various activities offered on the island. We have tailored a 4-week activity program for the stay, focusing on getting to know Zanzibar’s culture and people better and experiencing its many tourist attractions during leisure time around hospital internships.
Approximately 20 individuals stay together in the Try Medics house at the destination. During the internship, participants work in different departments depending on their chosen internship program. Typically, two individuals are assigned to a department, paired with their mentor.
We find that a strong bond is formed among travelers, finding joy in supporting each other and sharing the experience. We believe that good experiences bring people together, and the activities, as breaks from the internship, contribute positively to forming a strong community.

The goal for Try Medics is to provide a framework for a journey where one can develop both personally and professionally. A journey where you will gain relevant knowledge, gain perspective from encountering another country, and make many new acquaintances.
If you are considering a career in the healthcare field, the stay during your gap year can provide you with relevant experience, making you more confident in your career choice and enhancing your understanding of the healthcare profession. You’ll have the opportunity for observational internships, shadowing doctors, nurses, dentists, midwives, or physiotherapists in their daily work. This experience will acquaint you with what a healthcare career can entail and strengthen your medical knowledge. You won’t be directly involved in patient care during the internship. The healthcare professionals you shadow will have full patient responsibility, and learning will occur through interaction with them as they act as your mentor in their daily work.
For students already enrolled in higher education in healthcare, you can engage in clinical practice. Here, you may be given tasks under supervision based on your current level of education. Often, it will be possible to combine the stay with a study program. The internship will be an excellent way to gain clinical experience in a healthcare system different from the familiar Danish one and expand your understanding of global nursing. You’ll gain insights into tropical diseases rarely experienced at home.
